Dentist salaries worldwide

If I grow up I will be a dentist! - can say an american student who has read the U.S. News & World Report's rankings. Dentists excel from three of six sectors: this profession is not only the No. 1 in best job category, but on top of health care jobs and in second place of best paying job after physician. It is valid only for USA, but there is a massive disparity in dentists' average monthly income all over the world. (See the interactiv table below.)

Teeth are always in style.” - Dr. Seuss

Dental hygienists have been between the bests for years: in 2014 they were at No. 6 and now in 2015 at No. 5. One of the reasons is that this is the fifth least stressful of the 200 jobs according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Their training is not as long as for dentists, bachelor's degree is not required, most of them work part time, patients have not to fear them, because they are doing preventative health care.

Dentists have extremely huge net wages in the United States and an agreeable work-life balance comparing to other health care jobs. Along with incomes dentists' expenses are also important. So it is crucial where he or she purchases his dental equipments and materials.

No money in the world

While in the United States dentists are earning a median monthly income of $ 12,700, in European countries they are earning significantly less: for exemple in Hungary dentist's monthly earning in average in public sector is 225,000 Ft, wich corresponds only to $ 831, much smaller than the former figure. In Hungary dentists have a gross median income of 245,000 Ft ($ 868) in private companies, but it can even exceed 400,000 Ft (1,417). In Romania, the situation is worse where the average income is $ 571 wich does not even reach the two third of hungarian one and the lawest european salary.

After the United States it is in Great-Britain where it worth being a dentist, and Canada takes the high position #3 with the monthly median income of $ 6, 912. In Europe Germany is in the second place where the gender pay gap is high because a male dentist earns one and a half times more than his female colleague. Nor is it not indifferent how many hours they work for that money. In Thailand they work 42 hours a week, in US they pass only 38 hours in treating their patients. Thailand is interesting from several points of view: it is in this country that the difference is the biggest between the simple data recalculated in USD (965) and one by the purchasing power parity (2,405). This data by PPP is in third place after India and Philippines. Here is the lowest tax deducted (7%) and in Kuwait there is no tax on income.

Further interesting points from all over the world:

  • USA: big differences in salaries. Income depends on several factors: the specialization, the position geographique of the worklplace and the experience.
  • Canada: income doesn't depend necessarily on experience, it doesn't increase after years
  • Australia: salary increases with the number of years but start to decrease after 20 years of work
  • South Africa: dentists' earnings are higher in Cape Town than in Johannesburg, but in Pretoria they are signicifantly smaller.
  • China: there are not enough data, but they are earning probably lot.
  • Japan: more dentists than grocery.
