How is our PLA glass different?
PLA stands for polylactic acid. In contrast to our plastic cups, it is a plant-based, compostable material that is made from plant sugars and is heat-resistant up to a temperature of around 40 ºC. Today, it is mostly made from industrial maize, but more environmentally friendly solutions are also being researched, such as production from carbon dioxide or methane.
CPLA (crystallised polylactic acid) is a crystallised, heat-resistant PLA that is heat-resistant up to around 90 ºC and is a solution for serving hot drinks and food (hence cutlery, coffee and tea cups and their lids are made from CPLA). CPLA is also environmentally friendly and suitable for industrial composting.
Unfortunately, the purchase price of CPLA is currently still many times higher than that of its more environmentally harmful alternatives :-(
